Super Bowl 2013

Super Bowl 2013: All the Stars

Kate Upton washing a car in denim cutoff shorts "in slow-motion" in a teaser for Mercedes-Benz is bound to get some eyeballs prior to game day.

But what about the rest of this year's Super Bowl ads?

  • Complete Coverage: Super Bowl XLVII

As always, brands are teaming with celebrities for the biggest game of the year. And at up to $4 million a pop, this year's spots don't come cheap.

Advertisers have already rolled out teaser ads and many have unveiled who will be hawking their respective brands come Sunday. This year, many advertisers are building on what's hot -- right now.

Psy, Korean rapper and one of 2012's biggest break-out stars, will appear in a pistachio commercial. And just three days after the "30 Rock" series finale airs, we'll be seeing Tracy Morgan, one of the show's key stars, in an ad for sports drink MiO Fit. Amy Poehler, meanwhile, is on a lot of people's minds, having just co-hosted the Golden Globes in January. The funny-woman will grace the small screen in a new Super Bowl commercial for Best Buy. And likewise, this year's People's Choice Awards host Kaley Cuoco has linked up with Toyota.

So there will inevitably be a lot of star power this year. But Brian Steinberg, TV editor at Ad Age, thinks celebrity-based commercials are most effective when they maintain an element of surprise.

"Last year when Clint Eastwood showed up out of nowhere that was a really big deal and new," he told CBSNews.com about Eastwood's Chrysler spot. "It's not the person you would expect to see involved in Super Bowl advertising. Most times, it's people who are trending like this year with PSY and the pistachio commercial, or Kim Kardashian doing stuff for Skechers in the past. The best ones are people who surprise or shock with their appearance."

This year, Chrysler hasn't revealed who -- if anyone -- will be featured in its Super Bowl day commercial.

But we do know of a few other celebrities who will be popping in ads on millions of TV screens: Beyonce (Pepsi), Joe Montana (Skechers), Bar Rafaeli (Go Daddy), Usher and Willem Defoe (Mercedes) and Dwayne Johnson, also known as "The Rock" ("Got Milk?").

"You're going to see some celebrities in the Bowl no matter what. It's a natural part of advertising...You get someone who people are talking about for quality -- or a random reality star -- it's going to get some attention," said Steinberg.

And in 2013 -- probably more than ever -- buzz is building thanks to viral teaser ads. Brands have started carefully releasing information and extra footage leading up to Sunday when the game is broadcast live from New Orleans on CBS.
"Teasing is kind of an experiment. It really went into force last year with the car companies," Steinberg said. "Last year, everyone got things out early -- with Matthew Broderick coming back as Ferris Bueller and Jerry Seinfeld doing something for Acura."

But teasers can ruin that coveted surprise. "People talk about your ad ahead of the game but maybe not afterwards," said Steinberg.

And then there are the controversial spots. Almost every year there's bound to be an ad that ruffles a few feathers.

"Right now Volkswagen is getting a lot of push-back for white guys speaking like Jamaican people," said Steinberg of the car company's Super Bowl Sunday spot.

In this case, though, the government in Jamaica has endorsed the ad, as has Jamaican reggae star Jimmy Cliff, who performs a song in the spot.

Some say controversial ads, though, have backfired in the past.

"Companies have done something that's really heavy-fisted or offensive some years and they're paying for it," added Steinberg. "It's best to do something that's a crowd-pleaser and that won't polarize your audience."

Angelina Jolie Pregnant

New For Angelina Jolie

Takes the kids for a day out,

And tries to remember all of their names

The aesthetically pleasing group of children took a lovely trip to the aquarium, and managed to avoid being eaten by the sharks

Somewhere along the line, Angelina Jolie appears to have pulled the short straw and ended up with babysitting duties until the end of time (/the year).
While Brad Pitt is busy in the UK, eating baked beans and drinking pints of lager in the local Wetherspoons, Angelina and her brood of well-travelled children are nesting in Australia for the next six months, while she directs a new thriller- currently titled 'Unbroken' - and tries to convince Pax that his purple teddy bear needs a bit of a wash.
And because directing mostly just involves sitting in a chair with your name written on the back (occasionally yelling "cut!" whenever the cameraman forgets to stop filming) - and because washing teddy bears is best done with the kids out of the house - Angelina has even managed to find the time to take the children to Sydney aquarium.

We'd like to adopt Vivienne and Knox from Angelina

We'd like to write something insightful about the aquarium here, but unfortunately we've never been. But judging from Vivienne and Zahara's choice of souvenir fish, you can sit down in front of Pixar's Finding Nemo and have a pretty similar experience overall.

How is an eight year old better dressed than us?

It does look like Angelina had a nice time though - she seems all smiley in the photos. Sort of like somebody who's just been allowed to stroke a pet turtle in a petting pool.
Or just like somebody who knows she managed to single handedly get five under tens out of bed this morning, brush their teeth and make them breakfast. All without breaking a sweat.

New For About Megan Fox

Megan Fox baby bump pics are all the rage in 2013. Unfortunately, the expecting star has begun hiding her pregnant belly, as well as her due date, from the papz. Don’t worry, we’ve got the latest updates on the preg celeb.
On Friday, Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green were spotted at the JFK airport. When Fox spotted the paparazzi, she shielded her stomach from the view of the surrounding photogs.
Fox was able to hide her tummy, while Green pushed their 10-month-old son in a baby stroller through the crowded airport. Whether she will be able to keep up evading the papz remains to be seen.

Megan, who married Brian Austin Green, 40, just gave birth to her first child back in September. Eleven months later, the 27-year-old actress has announced that she is once again pregnant.

Page Six was among the first to break the story, as a rep for the celebrity couple confirmed:
“Megan is pregnant. I can confirm that Megan is expecting her second child with her husband Brian. They are both very happy.” Brian Austin Green and the couple’s 10-month-old baby
We bet so, considering an interview Fox gave with Marie Clare UK earlier in the year. Don’t worry, she didn’t call a director Hitler (again). She just talked about how great it is being a mom, telling the publication:
“All I wanted to do my whole, whole life was have a baby and, now, I’ve finally done it. I just want to give Noah as much of myself as I can. And I want to have more kids. That is where my heart is.”
Their first son, Noah, will surely be delighted to have a sibling. Maybe not as overjoyed as Fox was, when she announced the birth of her first son back on September 27, telling Facebook fans:
”We are humbled to have the opportunity to call ourselves the parents of this beautiful soul and I am forever grateful to God for allowing me to know this kind of boundless, immaculate love. Thanks to those of you who wish to send your positive energy and well wishes.”

Katy Perry Is Pop Music's Biggest Star

Katy Perry Is Pop Music's Biggest Star

Beyoncé is a goddess. Lady Gaga is an artist.

Beyoncé is an artist capable of whipping the world into an obsessive frenzy with just the slightest twitch of her hand—literally, she turned that very gesture into a global pop phenomenon—in turn bringing music listeners to their knees, bowing to her Tina-Turner-by-way-of-the-Tasmanian-Devil on-stage ferocity and star power. Lady Gaga is the kind of singing supernova who is shrewdly cognizant of the fact that pop music is, by nature, weird, and its stars themselves should be talked about as much as their songs. Justin Timberlake may be the closest heir to Michael Jackson’s throne we’ve seen yet, while Justin Bieber and One Direction dutifully fill their roles as the tween-set sensations.

Take a poll of who people think is music’s biggest pop star, and it’s likely that one of those names will be the knee-jerk response. But none of them are.
It’s Katy Perry.
She’s not the singer with the most buzz. She doesn't have fan armies that launch countdown clocks to the release of her next song, she isn't the first choice to cover an issue of Vogue, and her music and antics don't dominate water-cooler conversation. She's popular, but not hip. She makes music that everyone sings along to, but not many people—certainly not critics—really love. She dresses in bright costumes and adopts an over-the-top persona, but still reads as dim and normal.

While she certainly gets mentioned on the roster of reigning Queens of Pop, she’s not a deity, at least not the way Beyoncé or Lady Gaga often are often worshipped as. Yet on Thursday, Perry received her eighth number one single, a measure of astounding success that doesn’t just rival those god-like contemporaries, but actually exceeds them.

It’s fitting that Perry’s latest smash is titled “Roar.” Though she’s been around for over six years, the song is almost a second coming out. She’s been quiet—and very—successful this past decade, but now she’s roaring.
She’s music’s biggest pop star.

Perry’s surge is also the more remarkable considering the dim prospects projected for her when she first came onto the scene.

In 2007, Katy Perry debuted her first single, “I Kissed a Girl,” a PG-13 bubblegum pop track more Big Red spicy than Double Bubble sweet but nonetheless written off as a novelty song from a singer destined to be a one-hit wonder. The song was branded a “lipgloss lesbian” anthem by critics. Others dismissed it as faux provocation masking as pop.

“Some people have taken "I Kissed a Girl" the wrong way, but others seem to get the joke,” Perry told The Daily Mail in a 2007 article titled, “I’m No One-Hit Wonder.” The joke, it soon became clear, was on those skeptics.

“I Kissed a Girl” spent seven weeks at number one. Quickly silencing the one-hit wonder theorists, her follow-up, “Hot n Cold,” had a long residency in the Top 10, peaking at number three. In 2010, she released her sophomore album, Teenage Dream. Five consecutive singles from the album went to number one—“California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” “Firework,” “E.T.,” and “Last Friday Night.” A sixth, “The One That Got Away,” settled for number three, while two bonus singles off of a deluxe edition of the album—“Part of Me” and “Wide Awake”—charted at one and two, respectively.

Now “Roar,” in addition to topping the charts, has accomplished an even more impressive feat: knocking Song of the Summer “Blurred Lines” from its 12-week perch at number one. Only five other women have more number one songs than her. Their names? Mariah Carey, Madonna, Rihanna, Whitney Houston, and Janet Jackson.
You’ll notice the names glaringly missing from that list. Beyoncé, the deserving recipient of the title, the Greatest Performer of Her Time, only has five number one singles, and hasn’t had one since 2008’s “Single Ladies.” In fact, not one song off her last album, 4, charted higher than 16 on the Billboard Hot 100. In the same amount of time that Katy Perry has racked up eight number ones, Lady Gaga has only managed three.
Both Gaga and Perry released their new singles, “Applause” and “Roar” on the same day. “Applause” peaked at number four and has already fallen two spots to number six. “Roar” logged an increase in digital sales over the past week.
Hear her roar.
