The announcer at the Entertainer 's Basketball Classic at Rucker Park claims that Modern Harlem Shake was started by a man by the name of " Al B " ( the nickname Sisqo or Cisco ) . Al B was an alcoholic who would do a dance upon request . Because of its founders , this dance was originally called " albee " at Rucker and Harlem , but later became known as the Harlem Shake .
Al B was quoted saying that the dance was " rocking people who are drunk , this is an alcoholic shake that hangover , but it was fantastic , everyone appreciates it . " He says it comes from Ancient Egypt and described it as what mummy used to do . Because they are all wrapped up they could not really move , all they could do was shake . " A band from New York City took the name of the dance and dubbed themselves the " Harlem Shakes . " Their debut album Technicolor Health , released March 24 , 2009. " Harlem Shake " is a song by American producer from Brooklyn , New York Baauer . The song was uploaded to YouTube on May 10, 2012 , and a trend Harlem shake in February 2013.
